Common Information

Five people A, B, C, D and E went to a shop. In that shop, only five different types (P, Q, R, S and T) of pens were sold. Each of the five people purchased exactly four pens, each of a different type. Also, no two of the people purchased the same set of four different types of pens. The following bar graph provides information about the price (in Rs.) at which one pen of each of the given types is sold in the shop.

I. The price of the type of pen that was not purchased by A was Rs.10 more than the price of the pen, which was not purchased by C.

II. The price of the type of pen that was not purchased by B was Rs.10 more than the price of the pen, which was not purchased by D.

 Q. Common Information Question: 2/4 How many of the following could be the total amount (in Rs.) spent by D on purchasing the four pens? I. 120 II. 110 III. 100 IV. 90
 ✖ A. 1 ✔ B. 2 ✖ C. 3 ✖ D. 4

Solution:
Option(B) is correct

From additional information (I), we can conclude that the type of pen which was not purchased by A and C could be (Q, P), (R, Q), (R, S), (S, T), (S, P) and (Q, T) in the same order.

Similarly, from additional information (II), we can conclude that the type of pen which was not purchased by B and D could be (Q, P), (R, Q), (R, S), (S, T), (S, P) and (Q, T) in the same order.

The following table lists down the type of pen which was not purchased by each of the people.

Table below can be scrolled horizontally

The four types of pens purchased by D could be (P, Q, R and T); (P, Q, R and S); (P, R, S and T) and (Q, R, S and T).

Therefore, the amount (in Rs.) spent by D on purchasing the four pens could be 110 or 120.
So option B is the correct choice.
