Option(E) is correct

The constructions using being are awkward and wordy. Answer D is an example of a dangling modifier. Only Answer E is clear, and in the active voice throughout.

"When our friends abandon us", isnt this a future tense that may or may not happen but if it did, then "we feel great sorrow". but "being abandoned" (past continuous tense) mean it already happened and that they are feeling sorrow. Please correct my understanding here
