Option(D) is correct

In choices A, B, C and E, we have problems with what ‘they’ and ‘them’ refer to. Is it waves or patterns? And in C we have ‘they’ referring first to forecasts and then to waves or patterns.

 In D the pronoun comes only after we are clear that we are talking about waves.
